San Tan Foothills moved from 2A to 3A this year. It joins the 3A Central Region with American Leadership Academy-Ironwood, American Leadership Academy-QC, Benjamin Franklin, Coolidge, and Florence. Prior to joining 3A, the Sabercats went 8-2 last season, but lost in the first round of the 2A playoffs. They lost ten graduated players and are a young team this season.
The Sabercats had lost two straight games last month until they defeated Gilbert Christian, 34 – 16, on Aug. 31. Last Friday, the Sabercats were playing against Monument Valley (Kayenta, AZ). They were struggling in the first half and trailed 12 – 7 at halftime. In 3rd quarter, San Tan Foothills RB Caden Husar (SR) rushed for 5 yard touchdown, which gave the Sabercats a one-point lead, 13 – 12. The Cats’ defense was doing great in the game, as it stopped Monument Valley, who hadn’t scored since second quarter. The Mustangs had a chance to win a game but failed to make a drive. As of result, the Sabercats won, 13-12. They came back from a 12-point deficit to win the game.
Thanks to San Tan Foothills linebacker Brandon McMahan (SR) who had total 17 tackles with 7 solo tackles and one sack. He and the defense was able to stop the Mustangs from scoring more points. Without McHanan, the Sabercats would not have won the game. This was a big battle for the Sabercats. They are currently 2-2. This Friday, they will visit south Tucson, as they take on Sahuarita (3-1).
Will San Tan Foothills upsets Sahuarita, or will Sahuarita improves to 4-1?
